I’m not sure when exactly it happened, but this year I realized my life was a great abundance of love, of family/friendships, of laughs… and of clothes. I always knew I had a lot of clothes (you don’t earn a nickname like “Shopohollyic” in sixth grade that sticks with you for life for nothing!), and something this year made me realized that it is actually kind of ridiculous. I have three closets full of clothes, handbags, shoes and jewelry that I do (and don’t always) wear. I have de-cluttered my closets a grand total of four times this year, each time donating a large amount of items, and still, they are filled.
One of my most favorite brands, Cuyana (which was my secret store before they recently gained popularity through goop and various fashion blogger campaigns), has a motto that made me love them back when they first launched: fewer, better things. I truly think that genuine happiness comes from that belief, whether it be friendships, lovers or material items.
In attempt to appreciate all that I’ve been blessed with, I’m challenging myself to only wear the clothes I already own. If you have read Malcom Gladwell, you know the 80/20 rule in this case: you only wear 20 percent of your clothes 80 percent of the time. I don’t know how long this will last, but am looking forward to mixing things up a bit and getting creative!
Let the closet games begin! My first outfit of this challenge: olive leather jacket (Neimans), oatmeal V-neck sweater (Banana), skinny jeans (AE), and brown riding boots (Tory).
Do you find that you and your closet fall in the 80/20 rule? Let me know if you are joining in this challenge!
